Manet’s manipulation of dualities in his painting Olympia posed a direct challenge to conventional notions of nudity, prompting contestation over appropriateness of certain figural codes and challenging conventions of nude. This essay illustrates one approach for art historians teaching a critical history of nudity that includes multiple and dynamic gender identities.

Transgenic nude mice that express GFP across many tissues provide powerful tools for color-coded organ-level imaging. We have developed a strain of nude mice in which ubiquitous GFP expression provides an unprecedented model for studying cell processes within tumor microenvironments (TMEs). Fluorescence imaging revealed increased proliferation of K562 cancerous cells when implanted into nude R/J mice xenotransplanted with K562 cells from these nude R/J mice when viewed with fluorescence imager. These findings indicate that the TME may contain factors which promote tumorigenicity of human gastric cancer xenografts in nude mice, including EGF. This research could lead to identification of targets for therapeutic intervention against gastric cancer.
