GRCA archives contain an image of Lady, an early Golden Retriever that dates back to 1898 in North America, sitting next to Archie Marjoribanks (grandson of Lord Tweedmouth). This picture can be traced back to 99 per cent of current Goldens through Lady.
Assumptions about Golden Retriever founders have long held that imported Russian circus dogs were used to found their stock of Goldens Retrievers; one quote from Col. Trench at the time supports this belief; this information came directly from Lord Tweedmouth’s kennel man at that time, according to Mrs. Charlesworth’s book The Golden Retriever. However, Mrs. Charlesworth gives an account of a trip Trench made to Russia in search of circus dogs but failed to locate any for his breeding program there.
As it has now come to light that Lord Tweedmouth mixed Retrievers with Setters, suggesting a liver-colored Setter may have been Nous’ father and explaining why some modern Goldens may appear longer or darker than their British counterparts.
