Houston offers many LGBT clubs and venues, making it an excellent city for trans women in Texas to meet each other. But with more anti-transgender bills being passed this year than any other state, it’s wise to take safety precautions before going out.
The 2024 Houston Transgender Unity Banquet brought together community leaders and activists for an evening of inspiration and solidarity, while raising funds for important initiatives, including scholarships, Houston Pride events, Day of Remembrance ceremonies and much more.
At the same time, however, the banquet served as an important reminder of what the community must fight for; especially at a time when anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and harassment have increased exponentially in recent months – GLAAD and the Anti-Defamation League jointly released a joint report documenting over 350 hate or extremist incidents directed against LGBTQ individuals over just six months alone.
As Houston’s LGBT community faces increased attacks, members continue to come together in solidarity and offer each other support. For instance, Diana Foundation hosted a black-tie fundraiser this spring to benefit local AIDS services while Buddy’s bar in Montrose offers transgender women safe spaces to gather for drinks and dancing.
