The game features an intricate combat system with tight and precise controls. Vexx can perform basic slashes using the square button; pressing it again deals an uppercut; jumping while holding L trigger performs a flare kick; all these movements add to a special attack meter at the corner of the screen which will eventually allow him to use more powerful special moves.
Vexx was raised and trained by his grandfather to guard Overwood and possess superior fighting abilities. But after offending Dark Yabu, ruler of Overwood, Vexx saw his grandfather slaughtered. Vexx soon acquired magical Astani War Talons that gave him enough power to dish out some serious punishment on Dark Yabu’s men.
Vexx makes an allusion to Neo’s hand gesture in The Matrix film by giving a slow-motion middle finger gesture in his final battle against Yabu. This gesture serves as a clear reference.
Acclaim has produced some duds in its past, but this one stands out. Packed with innovation, superb challenge, stunning architecture, beautiful graphics and top-tier sound – not to mention cutting-edge sound design – Acclaim’s latest platformer should be added to anyone’s library who enjoys platform games – but don’t expect its storyline to hold up under close examination – it’s more of a sub-infant school snoozefest!
