Cats can be quite vocal creatures, yet have you taken the time to really listen to what they have to say? Between purring, chirping, trilling and hissing there is also an ever-present meow that expresses various emotions like frustration, fear, concern and need for attention according to Dr. Susanne Schotz of Lund University in Sweden who specializes in phonetics studies who has studied cat vocalizations to decipher them and create an interpretation.
Good news is that many cat parents have become adept at reading the sound of a meow as an indicator for what their cat needs – be it food, playmates or affection. A sudden change in meowing behavior could indicate something more serious like medical conditions or stressors.
Some meows may also include other sounds like whimpers or growls; if this occurs, it is wise to seek professional veterinary help and exclude any potential medical causes.
