Bravo network’s popularity with housewives was propelled by NeNe Leakes and “housewives,” depicting their antics with backstabbing and hair pulling as its hallmark traits. Now they are shifting focus to an organization which provides social and cultural support to African American families – Potomac Ensemble will focus on six African American women from DC “navigating” its cattiness (established by Philadelphia mothers in 1938).
Jack and Jill National Board has expressed its displeasure with this series, fearing it may portray its elite membership organization negatively and with gossipy overtones. Jack and Jill is not alone in their discontent: VH1’s Sorority Sisters was met with widespread outrage from sororities nationwide; Alpha Kappa Alpha expelled members who appeared on it.
Still, Potomac Ensemble producers remain confident that their show will offer an accurate depiction of Jack and Jill, an organization experiencing renewed membership due to black families feeling increasingly marginalized in predominantly white neighborhoods. Cast features some of Sandler’s familiar bit players; David Spade, Norm MacDonald, the Happy Madison guys as well as Latin comedian Eugenio Derbez as a wide-eyed, rat-faced Mexican landscaper prone to saying things such as “I’m just KEEEEEDING!” in his deepest rasp.
