Heteros_Men is an online community for men who identify as cis men and are attracted to other men, offering members a place to express opinions, ask questions and seek answers regarding their sexuality while supporting gay rights in an increasingly conservative and heteronormative society.
Heterormative ideologies conceptually link gender and sexuality, suggesting that how men behave around both women and men can determine his masculine self-worth (Kitzinger 2005). Men who internalize this ideology may feel threatened by groups that violate heteronormativity such as gay men who violate heteronormativity – their actions could compromise individual or institutional social status, leading to disgust sensitivity and subsequent antigay hostility (Crawford et al. 2014).
Our research seeks to survey adult cisgender men, and interview them for further in-depth understanding on survey concepts. Structural equation modeling will then be employed with Hegemonic Masculinity Theory as its basis, in order to test relationships between survey variables.
H-MSM have been shown to experience sexual identity and attraction discordance compared with concordant heterosexual men and GBQ+ men [2]. H-MSM tend to adopt traditional masculine norms and sex scripts so as to avoid misclassification as GBQ+ and maintain masculine self-worth; H-MSM also have higher rates of sex with women despite preferring men, often engaging in rough, aggressive, sexually fetishistic sexual encounters despite these preferences [3-].
