Gaybeast Com is the third full-length studio album from Minneapolis trio Gay Beast, formed in 2005 in response to Midwestern passive aggression. Their music is both politically and compositionally queer; drawing inspiration from Devo, Captain Beefheart, equatorial pop-rock from the 60s and 70s, no wave, and feminist theory among other sources. Armed with drums, scraped guitars, scraped and hammered vocals and retro-future synths; Gay Beast create songs which combine complexity with catchiness — providing songs that inhabit that space between complexity and tunefulness that neither occupies.
The band creates an infectious, unpredictable sound which defies easy categorization; its chaotic energy channels into an impressive whole that defies easy categorization. If one were to focus exclusively on specific characteristics like Middle-Eastern synths like those featured in “Poverty Witch” or baritone saxophone solos like in “Poly ASX,” one might miss the forest for the trees – these tracks offer too many variations and intricacies for easy classification.
