Camerino sits high atop a ridge in Marche region and today combines lively university life, noble heritage, and rich artistic and cultural legacy into an incredible mosaic. The center of town bears witness to this glorious past through narrow medieval streets winding their way between elegant houses with terracotta roofs as well as grand palaces with red tiles roofs.
The central district is enclosed by historic walls that remain almost intact from when they were originally erected to defend the ‘fortress of Sentino’ to its east, providing control of Chienti valley from distance as well as military advantage – difficult penetration was difficult but easily defended against.
In the Middle Ages, Spoleto was part of the Duchy of Spoleto and sometimes came under Papal States sovereignty. Additionally, it served as home to margravates and duchies which wielded great power even beyond city borders.
At its zenith, the city flourished under the direction of the da Varano family. These bankers financed many projects throughout the area including building large fortifications. Furthermore, they actively promoted art within both the town itself and its surroundings.
The Palazzo Ducale of Camerino now houses the University of Camerino and is an impressive structure designed by Oliverotto da Fermo and Francesco Orsini in 1502; decorated with frescoes depicting city arms as well as mythological scenes, it can seat 1,400 students.
