April Dawn Alison was the private feminine persona of Alan Schaefer (1941-2008). This book contains undated Polaroids taken during April Dawn Alison’s time; these SX-70 square format Polaroids show self-imaging which explores territory often explored by artists who use alter egos and costumes to convey an idea of identity fluidity.
These Polaroids document Alison’s progression in sexuality from chaste looks to more provocative imagery, culminating with her hanging upside down and chained by a neck harness behind kitchen cabinets with yellow dishwashing gloves strewn about as proof of domestic goddess status. Later images depicting Alison seem gagged and suspended from chains from the ceiling – suggesting an image more indicative of Bettie Page-esque Bondage rather than Pierre Molinier’s contorted, provocative poses.
