In 1882, Van Gogh met Clasina Maria Hoornik – affectionately dubbed Sien (later reduced to simply “Sien”). At that time she was working as both prostitute and seamstress in The Hague; after taking pity on her and agreeing to provide a home for both she and her five-year-old daughter at Van Gogh’s place for some time together, both became close and began exchanging letters frequently.
Van Gogh created several landscape paintings at Saint-Remy during his stay, drawing upon black-and-white prints and photographs as sources. Instead of copying nature as did many Impressionists, however, Van Gogh attempted to express subjective emotions through an impulsive use of paint with symbolic colors – an approach which later defined many modern movements, from Fauvism to Abstract Expressionism.
Van Gogh depicted this vibrant wheat field under the summer sun using vibrant hues to convey its dynamic energy and lifelike nature. He used color to capture its sense of movement and light – something which would become hallmarks of his style- while accentuating the undulations in the grass with different shades of blue which became an ongoing motif throughout his paintings.
