Heavenlysky__ is the only ski resort in the US to span two states and represents our country’s diversity. Boasting 4,800 acres of skiing and snowboarding terrain, an Adventure Peak activities area covering 15.2-acres, 30 lifts, Heavenly is one of the premier year-round mountain resort destinations nationwide. Vail Resorts Inc – Heavenly’s owner – is committed to supporting local Tahoe communities through a program known as Corporate Stewardship.
Martin Hollay immigrated from Hungary in 1957 with a simple desire for peace and happiness in America. A skilled Nordic skier and glove maker, Hollay found work at Tahoe Sports Center – then located near Stateline’s largest casino.
The Sports Center was a popular gathering spot for skiers seeking out an innovative form of skiing that encouraged style and flair, without adhering to traditional alpine traditions. Though its depth was shallower, skiers flocked there for something fresh.
In the late 1960s, the Sports Center saw growth due to an emerging style of skiing. By the late 1970s, its presence had expanded into Nevada; a chairlift had been installed, and it had changed into Heavenly Valley.
Bill Killebrew took over Heavenly Valley ski area in 1979 and focused on snowmaking capabilities; through hard work and some wet winters he eventually managed to bring Heavenly Valley out of debt in 1987, 10 years after bankruptcy was once an option. At that same time East Peak, Boulder and Stagecoach lodges were constructed on Nevada side during that same timeframe; 1988 saw Comet installed as the first express chair providing faster uphill travel; today Heavenly Valley operates with Doppelmayr detachable chairs equipped with DS series grips.
